The head offices of the daily Prothom Alo and the English daily Daily Star were attacked, vandalized, and set on fire in Dhaka’s Karwan Bazar . The violent incident began around 12:15 am on Thursday.
Eyewitnesses and police sources said that after the news of the death of Inqilab Manch spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi spread, an angry procession from Shahbagh went to Karwan Bazar. At one stage of the protest in front of the Prothom Alo office, the situation got out of control. A section of the protesters broke the gate and entered, took out furniture and documents and set fire to the street.
Later, the same group also moved towards the nearby Daily Star office and vandalized and set fire to it. The army, RAB and police were present at the scene in large numbers to try to control the situation. The fire service started extinguishing the fire.
Tension prevailed in the area till late at night. Law enforcement officials said the situation has been brought under control and an investigation is underway to identify those involved in the incident.
