  • After news of the death of Inqilab Manch convener Sharif Osman Hadi spread, his supporters began a protest by blocking the Shahbagh intersection in the capital on Thursday night. They took up residence at Shahbagh around 10:30 pm and made the area buzz with various slogans.

The protesters’ slogans included “Who are you, who am I, Hadi Hadi” , “We will all be Hadi” and “Catch the league, go to jail” . Tension prevails in the area over the situation.

Sharif Osman Hadi had announced to be an independent candidate for Dhaka-8 constituency. On December 12, he was seriously injured in a gunshot wound by miscreants while campaigning on Box Culvert Road in Purana Paltan. He was first treated at Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later at a private hospital in the capital. When his condition deteriorated, he was sent to Singapore by air ambulance.

It was confirmed that he died at around 9:45 pm on Thursday while undergoing treatment in Singapore. Immediately after Hadi’s death, public gatherings and protests spread to Shahbagh, a key intersection in the capital, creating new challenges for the law and order situation.
