On the occasion of the Martyred Intellectuals Day, the chief adviser to the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus paid homage to the martyred intellectuals at the memorial in Mirpur.
After 7am on Sunday (December 14th), he placed a wreath at the memorial and stood in silence for a while and paid homage to the martyrs.
On December 14, 1971, just before the victory of the Liberation War — Albadr, Razakar and members of the peace committee of the Pakistani forces planned to kill the country’s top intellectuals. Teachers, doctors, journalists, lawyers, engineers and cultural activists were blindfolded and killed in Rayerbazar and Mirpur. The purpose of this massacre was to destroy the nation on the brink of independence.
Martyred Intellectuals Day is celebrated every year on 14th December. The national flag is hoisted at half-mast, and the irreparable loss of freedom is remembered by the atmosphere of mourning across the country.
