Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur said there is no dollar crisis in the country and there is no pressure on imports. He made the remarks at the 4th Bangladesh Economic Conference held in the capital on Saturday.
According to the governor, there is no cause for concern about imports during Ramadan; in fact, imports of many products have increased compared to before.
Regarding the dollar exchange rate, he said, ” The decision to introduce a market-based exchange rate to control inflation has been implemented . This is increasing import capacity and there is no obstacle in the banking sector.”
He commented, “If someone cannot import, that is their own problem. It is the responsibility of the traders to bring in dollars after importing.”
While the governor’s statement sent a message of relief to the domestic financial markets, market observers say that international trade flows and actual reserve figures will be the key indicators to sustain this confidence in the coming months.
