A mild earthquake was felt in Sylhet at 2:55 am on Wednesday (February 26). Meteorologist Mustafa Kamal Palash confirmed this information.
Although many people did not feel the tremors as it was late at night, many citizens in Sylhet city and surrounding areas reported feeling the earthquake on social media. There were no immediate reports of damage or major hazards, but some panic spread.
The quake had a magnitude of 5.3, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The epicenter was south-southeast of the town of Kharupati in Assam, India, at a depth of about 10 kilometers.
Due to the proximity of the Mymensingh-Sylhet region and the Dauki Fault in Shillong, experts have warned of the possibility of multiple aftershocks in the next 24 hours, especially at night, with small tremors likely to increase.
