A powerful earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Thursday morning. The 6.3-magnitude tremor was recorded at 11:56 a.m. local time, about 63 kilometers (39 miles) from Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam province.
The earthquake was felt strongly in the surrounding area because it occurred at a depth of only 14 kilometers.
There are some differences in the information from earthquake monitoring organizations – the European-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) and the German Geoforschungszentrum (GFZ) measured 6.2, but the initial report said it was 6.3.
Initially, there was no threat of major damage or casualties. However, experts say that normal damage such as falling objects from buildings or broken windows could occur.
