A powerful 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck the Indian Ocean on Thursday. India’s National Seismological Centre (NCS) said the tremor, recorded at 10:26 am, was deep in the ocean, far from populated areas.
Earlier, three successive mild earthquakes struck the Bay of Bengal, northeastern India and Bhutan. A magnitude 4 tremor was felt in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday night and a magnitude 3.5 earthquake was felt in Manipur’s Noni district on Thursday morning. Another magnitude 3 tremor was recorded in Bhutan on the same night.
Mild tremors were felt locally in Manipur but no significant damage was reported. The meteorological authority said the earthquake in the Bay of Bengal was far from the coast and did not affect any coastal areas of Bangladesh or India.
