Last-minute preparations are underway at house number 196 in Gulshan-2 for BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman’s return to the country. Although the exact date of his arrival has not been announced yet due to security reasons, party sources have confirmed that there is a strong possibility of his return before Victory Day.
A delegation from the party recently met with law enforcement agencies. Security measures are being tightened in view of the excitement that Tarique Rahman will create among the party’s leaders and activists when he returns home.
Sources said that new CCTV cameras have been installed in house number 196 for her residence. The interim government recently completed the registration of the house and handed over the relevant documents to Khaleda Zia. Khaleda Zia lives in the adjacent ‘Firoza’ building.
The Chairperson’s Gulshan office is being prepared as Tarique Rahman’s office. CSF will be deployed for his security. In addition, BNP has also received approval to purchase two bulletproof vehicles before the election campaign.
BNP Joint Secretary General Humayun Kabir said, “The date of his return has not been decided; however, the election will be held under his leadership.”
Foreign Affairs Advisor Towhid Hossain said the government will provide him with a passport or travel pass if necessary.
Tarique Rahman has been living in London for 17 years. He has been conducting party activities from there since he went to the UK for medical treatment in 2008. He was acquitted in all cases after the August 5 uprising.
