RAJUK Chairman Riazul Islam has said that nearly 300 small and large buildings in Dhaka have been identified as vulnerable. He shared this information on Monday (24 November) at an event in the capital.
The chairman noted that without coordinated efforts, it will not be possible to manage the post-earthquake situation. He urged the government to ensure collaboration among all relevant agencies.
Riazul Islam said that building approvals are granted only after compliance with proper regulations, adding that no work at RAJUK is done in exchange for money.
Emphasizing that RAJUK itself does not design building plans, he said homeowners hire engineers or architects to prepare plans and submit them with the promise of following RAJUK’s rules. If those rules are later violated, any fines or penalties should be imposed on the homeowners, he added, as the responsibility does not lie with RAJUK.
He further stated that the current chaos stems from the fact that the city corporation, RAJUK, and the fire service operate separately rather than in a coordinated manner.
