Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs Adviser, Md. Touhid Hossain, confirmed that an official letter was sent to Delhi on Friday requesting the extradition of Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, both sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal for July’s mass atrocities.
The letter was sent from Bangladesh’s mission in Delhi to India’s Ministry of External Affairs. Bangladesh expects India to comply with the existing extradition treaty and hand over the convicted individuals.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5 last year during a student-led uprising. On November 17, the tribunal sentenced her and Kamal to death. Bangladesh had previously made formal requests for their return, but no positive response has been received from India.
