Following the closure of Dhaka University amid the emergency situation created after the recent earthquake, students have begun vacating their residential halls. Since Sunday morning (23 November), students from various halls were seen leaving with their essential belongings.
Students have welcomed the university administration’s decision in light of rising fears after the quake. Residents of Rokeya Hall said cracks appeared in several parts of their building. Welcoming the closure, they added that repairing the hall during this break would allow them to return to a safer living environment.
Meanwhile, many halls—including Rokeya Hall, Mohsin Hall, and Shahidullah Hall—are in a dilapidated condition. Several resident students spent the night demonstrating in front of the Vice Chancellor’s residence, demanding visible steps toward safe accommodation and raising three major demands.
Earlier, the university administration announced the closure of Dhaka University until December 6 due to the post-earthquake emergency. All students were instructed to vacate their residential halls by 5 p.m. on Sunday.
