Dhaka University has been declared closed until December 6 following the emergency situation created after the recent earthquake. On technical grounds, the authorities have instructed all students to vacate the residential halls by 5 PM on Sunday.
An emergency virtual meeting of the Dhaka University Syndicate was held on Saturday, presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad Khan. Syndicate members joined the meeting, along with the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the Principal of Dhaka Medical College, the Acting Director of the Planning and Development Office, the Acting Controller of Examinations, and the Acting Chief Engineer.
The meeting assessed the physical and psychological distress faced by students due to the earthquake and subsequent aftershocks, prioritizing their overall safety.
Opinions from BUET experts, the Director of Planning and Development, and the Chief Engineer were reviewed. Their consensus was that a thorough inspection of the residential halls is necessary, including a complete risk assessment and any required repairs. For this inspection and possible renovation, the halls must be vacated.
As a result, the meeting decided to close all classes and examinations until Saturday, December 6, 2025, and to empty all residential halls.
The notice requested hall provosts to take necessary steps to ensure students vacate the halls by 5 PM on Sunday.
It was also clarified that university offices will remain open as usual.
