The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity committed during the July–August uprising.
Sheikh Hasina, who ruled the country for over a decade and a half, fled to India after losing power in last year’s uprising. She is now the first former head of government in Bangladesh to be handed a death sentence.
Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was also sentenced to death, while former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun received five years in prison.
The verdict was delivered by the three-member bench of Tribunal-1, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumder. The other two members of the bench are Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Justice Md. Mohitul Haque Enam Chowdhury.
Previously, based on verdicts from this tribunal, five top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami and one BNP leader were executed during the Awami League government.
