Today is Shaheed Nur Hossain Day, commemorating the supreme sacrifice of the young pro-democracy activist Nur Hossain, who was killed during an anti-autocracy protest on November 10, 1987.
On that historic day, Nur Hossain took to the streets of Dhaka with slogans written on his body — “Let democracy be freed, down with autocracy.” Police opened fire on the demonstrators, killing him instantly and staining the streets with his blood.
His martyrdom gave new momentum to the pro-democracy movement. On the same day, Nurul Huda Bablu, a leader of the Jubo League, and Aminul Huda Tito, a peasant leader from Bajitpur in Kishoreganj, were also killed. Nur Hossain’s sacrifice became a turning point, accelerating the fall of the autocratic regime in the late 1980s and paving the way for the restoration of democracy in Bangladesh.
As in previous years, various political parties, social and cultural organizations are observing the day through tributes, discussions, and candlelight vigils in memory of the fallen heroes.
The fearless spirit of Shaheed Nur Hossain remains a powerful symbol of resistance and inspiration in the ongoing struggle for democracy.
