There will be no provision for a ‘note of dissent’ in the July Charter, said Md. Nahid Islam, Convener of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP). He stated that whatever consensus has been reached regarding the charter will ultimately be implemented by the people.
He made the remarks on Friday (November 7) while speaking as the chief guest at the launch of the University Teachers’ Forum (UTF) held at the Bangla Academy.
Nahid Islam said, “There will be no ‘note of dissent’ in the July Charter. The decisions that have already been agreed upon—those will be decided and implemented by the people. We hope to move toward elections soon through the legal framework of the July Charter.”
He further mentioned that in the upcoming parliament and the reform council to be formed, youth, teachers, women, minorities, and professionals will be included. According to him, this is how the goals of the July Charter will be realized.
Emphasizing that those who took part in the mass uprising should have representation in parliament, he said, “A reform council will be formed from the new parliament, which will work on drafting a new constitution. The participation of academics in that process is essential.”
He also added that the authority to enforce the July Charter should be entrusted to Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
