Severe Snake Infestation in Dhaka: 351 Snakes Rescued in Four Months

Staff Correspondent »

  • In several areas of Dhaka, a serious snake infestation has been reported over the past four months. According to the Bangladesh Animal Welfare Association, 351 snakes have been rescued from densely populated areas of the city during this period, most of which are venomous. The snakes include dangerous species such as Padma Cobra, Russell’s Viper, Krait, and Rat Snake.

Adnan Azad, the association’s coordinator, stated that snakes have been found even on the ninth floors of buildings, in homes and garages. The highest numbers were reported from Rajuk’s flat project in Sector 18, Uttara, and the Banasree area. He added that snakes likely climbed to higher floors using climbing plants and other structures.

Experts say the increase in snake sightings is due to the destruction of their natural habitats caused by urban development and filling of wetlands, canals, and ponds. Mizanur Rahman from Chittagong Medical College noted, “The rise in snake numbers is natural since humans have destroyed their habitats. Also, this is the breeding season for snakes.”

The rescued snakes are released into natural habitats in accordance with the Wildlife Protection Act 2012. Individuals are legally prohibited from keeping snakes. Azad stated that the snakes are released away from human settlements, ensuring they remain in environments where they will not come into contact with people.

Farid Ahsan, a zoology expert from Chittagong University, explained that Padma Cobras prefer watery environments such as rivers, canals, and ponds. However, due to human encroachment, these snakes are entering residential areas. During the rainy season, when water enters their natural burrows, snakes search for dry spaces and often move into human homes.
