President of the Gana Adhikar Parishad, Nurul Haq Nur, has said that if the current interim government wishes, the national election could be held as early as January.
He stated, “Everyone has signed the July Charter; there are no longer any obstacles to holding elections. I urge the government — hold the election in January. Let the nation begin the new year with a fresh democratic mandate.”
Nur made these remarks on Friday (October 31) while speaking at a discussion marking the anniversary of the Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) at the National Press Club.
He further said, “The demand for a referendum is being raised only to gain political advantage and mislead the people. We know about the behind-the-scenes negotiations. Some are bargaining for opposition positions, while others are using the idea of a referendum as a tool to secure 10 or 15 parliamentary seats.”
According to Nur, taking timely and fair election initiatives now would help restore political stability in the country and allow the people to freely choose their representatives.
