The burial of Abul Kalam Azad (36), who was killed after a metro rail bearing pad fell on him in Dhaka’s Farmgate area, has been completed. On Monday (October 27) at around 10 a.m., he was laid to rest at the Naria Central Jame Mosque graveyard in Shariatpur. Before that, his second funeral prayer was held at his native village, Ishwarkathi, in Naria.
A pall of grief has descended over the area following his tragic death. According to family and local sources, Abul Kalam Azad was the youngest of four brothers and the son of the late Abdul Jalil Chowkidar of Moktarer Char Union in Naria upazila. He lived in Pathantuli, Narayanganj, with his wife and two children—Abdullah (5) and Suraiya Akter (3). A graduate of Jagannath University, he ran a travel agency business in Dhaka.
Eyewitnesses said that while Abul Kalam was walking through the Farmgate area on Sunday noon, a heavy metal bearing pad suddenly fell from above, hitting him on the head. He was seriously injured and suffered profuse bleeding on the spot. Locals rushed him to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Naria Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Laki Das said, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of Abul Kalam. The upazila administration took part in his funeral and burial. We are standing beside his family and will continue to support them in any way possible.”
It should be noted that the fatal accident occurred on Sunday (October 26) noon when a bearing pad from the metro rail structure fell in Dhaka’s Farmgate area.
