The government has decided to increase the house rent allowance for teachers and staff of MPO-listed private educational institutions by 15% of their basic salary. The allowance will be implemented in two phases—7.5% will take effect from 1 November 2025, and the remaining 7.5% will be effective from 1 July next year.
Today (21 October), the Ministry of Finance sent a letter to the Ministry of Education announcing this decision.
Education Advisor Professor Dr. Chowdhury Rafiqul (CR Abrar) stated that the Finance Ministry has approved the phased increase of house rent allowance for MPO-listed teachers.
Earlier, last Sunday, the Finance Ministry issued a notification granting a 5% increase in house rent allowance in response to teachers’ demands. However, teachers rejected this partial increase and decided to continue their movement.
The earlier notification stated that considering the government’s budget limitations, MPO-listed teachers and staff in private educational institutions would receive a house rent allowance at 5% of their basic salary (minimum 2,000 Taka). It also mentioned that all relevant rules and regulations must be strictly followed, and the authorities responsible will be held accountable for any future irregularities.
According to the new decision, teachers will receive the increased allowance starting November, which will be fully raised to 15% by next July.
While the teacher community welcomed the decision as positive, many have emphasized the need for further increases in allowance to align with the basic salary structure.
