In connection with the murder of Jagannath University student Zubayed Hossain, the accused, Mahir Rahman, has been handed over to police by his mother. Early Monday (October 20), Mahir’s mother brought him to Bangshal Police Station and surrendered him to the authorities. However, police sources confirmed that no formal case has been filed yet.
On Sunday (October 19) afternoon, Zubayed Hossain — a postgraduate student in the Statistics Department of Jagannath University and a member of the BNP’s student wing convening committee — was stabbed to death while tutoring at a house in Old Dhaka’s Armanitola area. His blood-soaked body was recovered from the staircase of the house. Based on the family’s allegations, police identified Mahir and several others as suspects in the case.
Zubayed’s elder brother, Enayet Hossain Soikot, said they wanted to file a case naming five people — a student named Barsha, her parents, Barsha’s boyfriend Mahir, and Mahir’s friend Nafis. However, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Bangshal Police Station initially refused to accept the case, suggesting they reduce the number of accused. The OC, Rafiqul Islam, later stated that the police would accept the case with the names provided by the family but had only advised them to consult university teachers before finalizing the list.
Following the murder, Jagannath University students staged protests in front of Bangshal Police Station, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. They also blocked Tati Bazar intersection and lit fires as part of their demonstration. In response to the tragic incident, the university authorities declared two days of mourning and postponed all events scheduled for University Day on October 22.
