A Dhaka court has granted four days’ remand for former Member of Parliament (MP) Haji Selim and his son Solaiman Selim in connection with the murder of jhoot trader Monir during the July Movement in the capital’s Shahbagh area.
On Monday (October 20), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate GM Farhan Ishtiaq issued the order. The two accused were produced before the court, where the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Mainul Islam Khan Pulak of Shahbagh Police Station, sought a 10-day remand for interrogation. Public Prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki represented the state in favor of remand, while advocate Shree Pran Nath, representing Haji Selim, appealed for bail and cancellation of the remand plea. After hearing both sides, the judge granted a four-day remand.
According to the case statement, on August 5 last year, small-scale jhoot trader Md. Monir joined the protest in the Chankharpul area during the July Movement. He was shot dead on the spot by gunfire allegedly from the accused. Later, his wife Rozina Akter filed a murder case with Shahbagh Police Station on March 14 this year, naming 351 individuals and mentioning another 500 unidentified persons as accused.
Notably, police arrested Haji Selim on September 2 last year and his son Solaiman Selim on November 14. They have since been shown arrested in several cases and placed on remand multiple times.
