Sarjis Alam, the chief organizer of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP) for the northern region, has termed the Election Commission’s decision not to allocate the ‘Shapla’ (water lily) symbol to his party as politically motivated and without any legal basis. He alleged that the decision was taken with a specific agenda in mind.
Speaking at a coordination meeting organized by the NCP’s Dinajpur district branch at the District Shilpakala Academy auditorium on Sunday (October 19), Sarjis Alam said there is no legal obstacle to granting the Shapla symbol, and that the commission made the decision to please certain quarters. He added that free and fair elections are not possible under such a commission.
Sarjis Alam further stated that the NCP will participate in the upcoming election with the Shapla symbol and will politically resist any unjust decision by the commission. Referring to the issue of not signing the July charter, he said that its impact will be determined by the people, adding that “it’s impossible to mislead the public with a baseless piece of paper.
