Gonoforum has signed the July National Charter. On Sunday (October 19), the party’s acting president Subrata Chowdhury and general secretary Mizanur Rahman signed the charter at the LD Hall of the National Parliament.
The ceremony was presided over by Professor Ali Riaz, Vice-Chair of the National Consensus Commission. Present were commission members Safar Raj Hossain, Dr. Badiul Alam Majumdar, Dr. Iftikharuzzaman, and the event was conducted by the Chief Advisor’s Special Assistant Monir Haider.
Earlier, on Friday, representatives of 24 political parties and alliances signed the charter at an event held in the South Plaza of the National Parliament. However, youth-led parties from the July people’s uprising, including the National Citizens Party (NCP) and four leftist parties, did not sign. Gonoforum also initially refrained from signing because the draft recommended removing the Declaration of Independence from the Constitution.
After the commission withdrew the controversial recommendation, Gonoforum held discussions with the commission and subsequently signed the charter on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 PM. This marks Gonoforum’s official participation in the National Consensus Charter.
