After nearly three hours of blockade, MPO-listed teachers have withdrawn their protest from Shahbagh. Before 5 PM on Wednesday, they left the area but warned that if their demands were not met soon, they would march toward Jamuna (the state guesthouse) for a siege program.
Earlier, around 2 PM, the teachers began their blockade demanding a 20% house rent allowance based on the basic salary, a medical allowance of Tk 1,500, and a 75% festival allowance for staff. The demonstration brought traffic in the Shahbagh area to a standstill, causing severe congestion.
During the protest, Principal Delwar Hossain Azizi, member secretary of the MPO Teachers’ Nationalization Alliance, said, “Our movement is on the path to success. We will not retreat even an inch until our demands are met. The medical allowance cannot be Tk 1,499 — it must be Tk 1,500. And the employees must get 75% of the festival bonus.”
Teachers participating in the movement said they had been compelled to take to the streets as their rightful demands had long been ignored by the authorities. They declared that unless the government fulfills their demands, their next program will be to lay siege to the Jamuna state guesthouse.
