Heavy seasonal storms and rainfall in Mexico have caused floods and landslides, leaving at least 44 people dead. Another 27 are reported missing, according to the country’s central disaster management office.
Veracruz state has been the hardest hit, with 18 bodies recovered from various areas. Hidalgo reported 16 deaths, Puebla 9, and Querétaro 1.
Between October 6 and 9, tropical storms Priscila and Raymond brought intense rainfall across the country. According to the meteorological department, Veracruz alone recorded 540 millimeters (over 21 inches) of rain in just three days. The heavy rains triggered multiple landslides, and strong winds caused trees and power poles to collapse onto homes.
The ongoing disaster has destroyed approximately 16,000 homes across 55 cities in Mexico. More than 300,000 people remain without electricity. Authorities have warned that the death toll could rise further.
