Renowned international photojournalist and human rights activist Dr. Shahidul Alam returned to Bangladesh early Saturday morning at 4:55 AM via Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after being released from Israeli detention. Upon arrival, he expressed deep gratitude to the government, international partners, and the people of Bangladesh for their swift action and solidarity.
Dr. Alam stated, “Gaza is still not free. Attacks are ongoing. Our work is far from over. What we went through is nothing compared to the suffering of the people of Gaza.”
Abduction and Release
On Wednesday morning, Israeli occupation forces abducted Dr. Shahidul Alam along with several journalists, doctors, and crew members aboard the humanitarian aid vessel ‘Conscience’ (Konshans), which was en route to deliver aid to Gaza.
Following the incident, the office of Nobel laureate and Dr. Alam’s chief advisor, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, immediately initiated diplomatic efforts, instructing Bangladeshi embassies in Jordan, Egypt, and Turkey to establish contact with relevant foreign ministries and secure Dr. Alam’s release.
International Cooperation
After his release, Dr. Alam traveled from Tel Aviv to Turkey before making his way back to Dhaka with the assistance of state authorities. Dr. Yunus extended special thanks to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for his role in ensuring Dr. Alam’s safety and return.
Standing Firm for Humanity
In his statement upon return, Dr. Shahidul Alam emphasized that his personal freedom was not the end of the story. He strongly urged the international community to continue fighting for justice and freedom for the people of Gaza.
“This isn’t just Gaza’s fight—it’s a fight for justice. I’ve returned, but we must ask ourselves—what are we doing for those still trapped in Gaza?”
