Amid political instability, French President Emmanuel Macron is set to appoint a new Prime Minister within the next 48 hours. A senior official from the Élysée Presidential Palace confirmed this information to Reuters on Wednesday, October 8.
The official stated that most legislators are against dissolving parliament. They favor political stability and passing the new budget. “Considering all factors, the President has decided that a new Prime Minister will be appointed within 48 hours,” the official added.
Earlier, on October 6, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu resigned. Macron’s close ally is currently serving as the interim Prime Minister.
Recently, the country experienced unrest and protests over government budget cuts. In September, the debt-stricken government decided to reduce welfare spending by $4.4 billion, triggering strong public and opposition backlash.
As a result, former Prime Minister François Bayrou resigned after losing a parliamentary confidence vote, and Lecornu succeeded him. However, unable to manage the situation, he resigned after just 27 days in office.
In an interview with France 2 television a day before his resignation, Lecornu stated, “There is still an opportunity to overcome the crisis. I have advised the President to promptly appoint a new Prime Minister.”
Within 24 hours of the interview, the Élysée Palace announced the appointment of a new Prime Minister.
