The announcement of the 2025 Nobel Prizes has begun, with the first being in the field of Medicine and Physiology. This year’s prize has been awarded to Marie Branco, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for their groundbreaking research on peripheral immune tolerance.
Their study revealed how the human immune system avoids unnecessary reactions against the body’s own components or harmless external elements (such as food substances or beneficial gut bacteria). This mechanism, known as peripheral immune tolerance, plays a crucial role in preventing autoimmune diseases.
The official announcement was made at 3:30 PM (Bangladesh time) on Monday from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
The three Nobel laureates will receive a gold medal, a diploma, and a total of 11 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.2 million US dollars or 146.1 million Bangladeshi taka). The prize money will be shared equally among them.
Every year, Nobel Prizes are awarded in six categories—Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature, Economics, and Peace—to honor exceptional contributions in these fields.
