After two decades, BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has given a face-to-face interview to the media. In this interview with BBC Bangla, published on Monday (October 6), he spoke openly about his possible return to Bangladesh along with various political issues.
On the question of his return, Tarique Rahman said:
“For some valid reasons, perhaps my return was delayed. But I feel the time has come. InshAllah, I will return home soon.” He further added that during the expected national election, he will make every possible effort to be among the people.
When asked if he would return before the election, he replied that politics and elections are inseparably connected with political workers. Therefore, when the people demand a free and fair election, he intends to be in Bangladesh, standing with the people.
Regarding concerns over his security if he returns, the BNP leader said that different quarters have raised various fears, but mentally he has always remained in Bangladesh despite living abroad.
Explaining why he remained silent in the media for so long, Tarique Rahman mentioned that during the past autocratic government, a court order restricted his right to speak. Even after addressing the Press Club once, the authorities tried to ban him. However, he continued reaching people through social media and other means.
He said:
“I have not remained silent. I kept speaking, kept reaching out to people. The media may not have been able to publish or broadcast my words, but I never stopped.”
