Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has further strengthened Bangladesh’s responsible global role by participating in the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). His visit highlighted the country’s renewed pledge to democratic governance, humanitarian solidarity, and constructive international cooperation, according to Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.
In a statement on Friday (October 3), the press secretary said that Professor Yunus led the Bangladesh delegation at the UNGA’s high-level session, where he addressed the international community, held bilateral meetings with world leaders, and presented Bangladesh’s vision on democracy, humanitarian leadership, and future economic cooperation. He also reaffirmed Bangladesh’s firm commitment to free, fair, and participatory elections.
The delegation included representatives from three political parties, marking the first time such a prestigious group joined an international mission together. They also met expatriate diplomats, business leaders, and politicians, sending a strong message of Bangladesh’s united democratic journey.
In bilateral meetings with world leaders, key discussions focused on democratic governance, trade, climate resilience, and human development. Yunus also met UN Secretary-General António Guterres and heads of several international organizations. The Rohingya crisis remained a central issue, with emphasis on safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation. The U.S. and U.K. pledged a total of $96 million in new assistance for the Rohingya.
Additionally, talks with leaders from Kosovo, Albania, and other European nations created new opportunities for labor market expansion, which is expected to boost remittances and strengthen people-to-people ties.
The press secretary further noted that Professor Yunus requested the UN to conduct an independent review of Bangladesh’s progress toward graduating from Least Developed Country (LDC) status, reflecting the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
