Former State Minister for Home Affairs Sohel Taj was barred from boarding a US-bound flight at Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. The matter was confirmed to the media on Friday (September 26) by his sister, Mahjabin Ahmed Mimi.
She said Sohel Taj’s foreign trip had been blocked, adding that the incident likely took place on Wednesday. However, she declined to explain the reason, saying, “You should ask them about it.”
Airport immigration authorities confirmed that Sohel Taj was prevented from leaving the country due to a travel restriction imposed on him.
Sohel Taj, son of Bangladesh’s first Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad, was elected a Member of Parliament from Gazipur-4 (Kaliakair) in 2001 and again in 2008. On January 6, 2009, he was appointed State Minister for Home Affairs in the Awami League-led cabinet. However, on May 31 of the same year, he resigned from the post citing personal reasons.
