Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus is scheduled to deliver a speech at the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday (26 September). The session begins at 9 a.m. local time in New York, where he will be the 10th speaker. In Bangladesh, the address will be aired at 7 p.m.
His speech is expected to highlight the interim government’s reform initiatives, the aspirations of the July 2024 mass uprising, the commitment to hold free and fair national elections in February 2026, the ongoing judicial process regarding the July killings, and the current state of the Rohingya crisis.
In a press briefing, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said Dr. Yunus will inform the international community about the reforms undertaken by the interim government over the past 14 months and the progress of the country’s economic recovery. The core message of his address will be the assurance that a free, fair, peaceful, credible, and festive national election will be held by 15 February.
Dr. Yunus arrived in New York on Monday (22 September) to attend the UNGA session. His delegation includes BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, BNP Acting Chairman’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humayun Kabir, Jamaat-e-Islami’s Naib-e-Ameer Dr. Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, National Citizens’ Party Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain, Joint Convener Dr. Tasnim Jara, and U.S.-based Jamaat leader Nakibur Rahman.
