BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the upcoming national election will be held in February based on trust, not distrust, and that the Chief Adviser has also taken a positive stance on the matter. However, he warned that a vested quarter is trying to destabilize the country, which must be resisted collectively.
In a recent interview with New York–based Bangla newspaper Thikana, Fakhrul made these remarks. Speaking with journalist Khaled Mohiuddin, he asserted that the election will certainly take place in February. However, he emphasized that the distrust that has developed among the people must be removed, and confidence must be rebuilt from now.
Criticizing the Awami League’s politics and governance as divisive, the BNP leader alleged that the ruling party’s activities over the last 15 years have created extreme polarization in national politics. He said this division has now spread beyond political parties to the media and even into society at large, making distrust the biggest obstacle.
According to Fakhrul, the current responsibility of political parties is to restore mutual confidence. He warned that without rebuilding trust, not only the election but also the country’s democracy and economic stability will be at risk. He stressed that the next election must be contested on the foundation of national unity.
