The caretaker government has expressed deep regret over the incident at New York’s JFK Airport, where Akhtar Hossain, Secretary of the National Citizens’ Party (NCP), was targeted with eggs.
In a statement issued Tuesday (September 23) from the Chief Adviser’s press wing, it was reported that BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, NCP leader Akhtar Hossain, and Tasnim Zara were subjected to politically motivated attacks. The incident was allegedly carried out by supporters and affiliates of the ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The statement noted that the incident reflects the violent political culture cultivated during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. The caretaker government emphasized that building a peaceful, democratic, and participatory Bangladesh remains its priority.
It further mentioned that security arrangements had to be altered at the airport due to last-minute visa issues, resulting in some gaps in protection. Immediately after the incident, the Bangladesh Mission contacted the New York Police Department, and one person has been arrested; the investigation is ongoing.
The caretaker government stressed that political violence, whether domestic or abroad, will not be tolerated. Legal and diplomatic measures will be taken in response, and security for the Chief Adviser and accompanying delegation has been significantly strengthened.
