Dhaka recorded 71 millimeters of rainfall between 6:00 am and 9:00 am today (Monday), according to the Meteorological Department. Including the downpour that began last night, a total of 105 millimeters of rain fell between midnight and 9:00 am.
The sudden heavy rain caused severe waterlogging in areas like Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Kalabagan, Green Road, Karwan Bazar, New Market, and Motijheel, with water levels ranging from knee-deep to waist-deep. Office-goers and daily commuters faced immense suffering, as many roads remained waterlogged even around 10:30 am.
Meteorologist Md. Hafizur Rahman said the rainfall was triggered by the monsoon system. While heavy rain is less likely in Dhaka later today, a low-pressure area formed over the North Bay of Bengal, which may cause heavy showers particularly in Khulna and coastal regions. Another low-pressure system is also likely to develop by Wednesday.
In the past 24 hours, the highest rainfall in the country was recorded in Feni, at 116 millimeters.
