Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus will leave Dhaka for New York on the night of September 21 to attend the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. Four prominent politicians will accompany him on the trip. They are BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Jamaat-e-Islami Naib Amir Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher, National Citizens Party (NCP) Secretary General Akhtar Hossain, and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s foreign affairs advisor Humayun Kabir.
Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Touhid Hossain stated at a press conference that these four politicians were included due to the country’s special circumstances. The Chief Adviser is expected to arrive in New York on September 22 and return to Bangladesh on October 2.
He further mentioned that the Chief Adviser will deliver a speech at the UN General Assembly on September 26. In his address, he will highlight the reforms undertaken in the past year and present Bangladesh’s commitment to establishing a truly democratic system through the upcoming elections.
This year’s UNGA session is particularly significant for Bangladesh. On September 30, under the chairmanship of the UNGA President, a high-level conference titled “High-Level Conference on the Situation of Rohingya Muslims and Other Minorities in Myanmar” will be held. This is the first high-level meeting at the UNGA focused on the Rohingya crisis. To expedite solutions, an international partners’ meeting with Rohingya representatives was held in Cox’s Bazar last month.
Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumdar, and Senior Assistant Press Secretary Foyez Ahmad were also present at the press conference.
