On Friday, local residents continued to evacuate to safer places as the waters of the Koshi River began to rise again in the Rosua district of Nepal-China border. Witnesses said many people were taking shelter in the high-rise areas of the hills, fearing that the river water would rise.
According to Nepal police, the death of 489 people has been confirmed on the basis of the bodies recovered as of Friday afternoon. The bodies were recovered from eight districts.
The most bodies were found in Chitwane, according to the district. The bodies were recovered from Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East), four in Gorkha, forty-seven in Dhading, thirty-seven in Nuakot, nine in Tanahun, and two from Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta West).
Missing 2,381
Nepal police said two thousand 381 people were still missing. Sixty-four of the missing were foreign nationals. They are citizens of India, the United States, Ukraine, Malaysia, Australia, the United Kingdom and Canada.
In addition, 127 expatriates from Nepal and 1 thousand 737 local nationals are also missing.
The fear of a new plan
Emergency services said efforts were underway to evacuate vulnerable families to safer places. However, rescue operations have been temporarily suspended or restricted in some areas amid fears of fresh flooding.
The water level of the Koshi River in Bho has risen again, causing panic in the border areas. Authorities fear the situation will be further complicated by the overflowing of lakes caused by landslides in Tibet.
Rescue teams have been put on alert and local residents have been advised to evacuate to safer places.
