The newly elected President of the country, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War at the National Memorial in Savar.
On Saturday (August 22nd), he reached the National Memorial at 10am and paid homage to the martyrs. After placing wreaths, the President stood in silence for a while and paid homage to the countless martyrs of the Liberation War.
At that time, a contingent of three forces presented the President with a guard of honour. After paying homage, he wrote his own feelings in the visit book of the National Memorial.
Tight security arrangements were made at the National Monument and surrounding areas over the President’s visit.
sworn in as president on Friday
Earlier on Friday (August 21st), Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was sworn in as the 23rd President of the country at the Durbar Hall of Bangabhaban. He was sworn in by acting Speaker of the National Assembly, Barrister Kaiser Kamal. Cabinet secretary Nasimul Ghani chaired the oath-taking ceremony.
Mirza Fakhrul was elected on Thursday (August 20th) with 255 votes out of 343 legitimate votes in the presidential election held in the national parliament. His competitor Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed won 88 votes.
