  • Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed has been granted conditional bail by a Dubai court, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said. However, the Bangladesh government has already appointed a law firm in the United Arab Emirates to cancel her bail, he added.

The Home Minister made this statement in response to questions from journalists after a view-exchange meeting with officials of Rajshahi Range and Metropolitan Police at Rajshahi Police Lines on Sunday (August 2) afternoon.

He said that after learning about the matter, he spoke to the Home Secretary and took steps to collect information through the Bangladesh Ambassador in Dubai.

The Home Minister said that the government had appointed a law firm for the case a few days ago and had instructed them to apply for the cancellation of Benazir Ahmed’s bail. He added that it was initially learned that Benazir was granted bail on the condition that she not leave the United Arab Emirates. He has also ordered the collection of certified copies of the court order containing the bail conditions.

Regarding Bangladesh’s next steps, he said the government is moving forward with the legal process and hopes that it will be possible to quickly repatriate Benazir Ahmed by canceling the bail.

Earlier in the morning, the Home Minister attended the closing parade of the first phase of the 27th BCS (Police) batch at the Sarada Police Academy in Rajshahi as the chief guest. There, he said that the police is not a lathi-powered force of any party or group; rather, as a party-influence-free, modern, technology-based and humane force, it will follow a zero-tolerance policy against corruption.

Benazir Ahmed served as the IGP of the police from April 15, 2020 to September 30, 2022. There are multiple cases against her by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of illegal acquisition of wealth, concealment of wealth information, and money laundering. On February 10, 2025, the court ordered the execution of an arrest warrant against her through Interpol.
