Police have removed the protesting students from the movement in front of the parliament building demanding the resignation of the education minister. Later, a section of the students took a stand in the Arang-adjacent area of the capital and raised tensions between the police and the protesters.
The incident took place around 6pm on Tuesday (July 14th).
According to eyewitnesses, the students took a procession from the Science Lab area as part of the day’s programme. During the meeting, the police prevented a delegation from going to the parliament building. Tensions between the two sides broke up and the police dispersed the students.
Later, a section of the students took a stand in the arong-adjacent area. According to the police, some protesters were removed from the situation under control when some protesters threw brickbats at law enforcement personnel.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) deputy police commissioner Ibn Mizan said no procession or rally was allowed in the parliament building area during the parliamentary session. He claimed that the police initially showed restraint, but later action had to be taken to prevent the deterioration of the law and order situation.
Since Tuesday morning, students held road blockades, demonstrations and human chains demanding the resignation of the education minister in different parts of the capital. Among their demands were reconsidering the decision to hold the examinations in the catastrophic weather, the solution to the complaints about the quality of the question paper and the education minister’s alleged derogatory remarks about the students.
In the afternoon, the students announced a deadline to fulfill their demands. They then moved in front of the parliament building. According to the latest information, the police have stepped up security in the parliament building and surrounding areas and the situation is under control.
