US President Donald Trump has claimed that a major US deal with Iran has been reached. At the same time, he announced the lifting of restrictions on the use of the Strait of Hormuz and US sanctions.
In a post on social media, Trump said, “The deal with Iran is done. Congratulations to everyone. I am authorizing the duty-free use of the Strait of Hormuz. I am also ordering the lifting of the US blockade there. Now the world’s ships can sail normally and oil transportation will continue.”
Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is playing a role as a mediator in the ongoing peace talks between the United States and Iran, also confirmed the deal. In a message on social media early Monday, he said that the two countries had reached an agreement to stop the war.
According to Shehbaz Sharif, the peace agreement will be formally signed in Switzerland next Friday (June 19). He said, “We are pleased to announce that a peace agreement has been reached between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Both sides have agreed to an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, especially in the relevant regions, including Lebanon.”
However, the Iranian government has not yet officially announced the completion of the agreement, although the country’s state television and various media outlets have published news on the matter, quoting the Pakistani Prime Minister’s statement.
Iranian state media is touting the potential deal as a diplomatic success for the country, claiming that progress towards a negotiated resolution of the crisis is an important achievement for Iran.
According to analysts, if the agreement is implemented, tensions in the Middle East will decrease, stability will return to the global energy market, and shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which is important for international trade, will become more normal.
