Bangladesh Bank Governor Md. Mostaqur Rahman said the activities of the Combined Islami Bank will be more dynamic through the appointment of the new chairman and managing director (MD).
He made the remarks at a post-budget press conference at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Friday.
Rejecting the allegation raised by the Bangladesh Bank on the ‘illegal interference’ under the management of Islami Bank, the governor said he was changed on March 16th after allegations of irregularities were made against a five-member board member of the interim government. However, the central bank did not intervene in the transfer, promotion or appointment of any official or director of the bank.
He said Bangladesh Bank is continuing to monitor the stability of the banking sector, good governance and the confidence of customers. He hoped that the new leadership would bring a positive change in the activities of the bank.
On the other hand, Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that despite the limited resources and financial challenges, efforts have been made to increase the allocation to various sectors in the budget of the fiscal year 2026-27. He said the proposed budget reflects the expectations and needs of the common people.
The finance minister said the budget of the present government is not for any particular group, but for the development and welfare of the people of all classes and professions, including farmers, workers, businessmen, employees.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Finance, National Board of Revenue (NBR) and Planning Commission were present at the post-budget press conference. Besides, Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan, Education Minister Dr. ANM Ehsanul Haque Milon, Fisheries and Livestock Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid Yasin, State Minister for Planning Junaid Saki and Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani attended the function.
The government’s position was highlighted at the press conference on the current situation of the banking sector, the management structure of Islami Bank and the implementation of the new fiscal budget.
