The death of six newborns at the Ad-Din Medical College Hospital in the capital’s Moghbazar has caused concern and excitement.
Sheikh Zahidul Islam, Deputy Police Commissioner of Ramna Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, confirmed the matter on Wednesday (May 27) morning.
Police sources said the dead children were between one and two days old. They were all admitted to the hospital’s post-operative ward. However, no official explanation has been received as to what caused their deaths.
DC Sheikh Zahidul Islam said, “We have received information that six children have died in the hospital. However, the exact cause of death is not yet confirmed. Police are at the scene and the matter is being investigated.”
After the incident, extra precautions were taken in the hospital area and senior police officials also visited the spot. The hospital administration also acknowledged the incident. Administrative Director of the hospital, Tariqul Islam Mukul, said that they came to know that the incident took place at night and detailed information is being collected.
According to health experts, when multiple newborns die at the same time, the hospital’s infection control measures, treatment protocols, oxygen or drug supply, and the condition of the intensive care unit are usually examined seriously. However, it is risky to comment on the specific cause of death before the investigation is complete.
According to analysts, such incidents raise questions about the safety and quality of not only the hospital concerned, but also the neonatal care system as a whole. Therefore, there is a demand for a prompt, transparent and impartial investigation to uncover the real cause.
