Police have arrested two youths on charges of killing a retired school teacher, his wife and two children for stopping them from consuming yaba on the roof of their house in Machuapara, Rangpur city.
Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mohammad Abdul Mabud gave this information at a press briefing held at his office on Sunday (August 23) afternoon.
The two arrested are Mugdah Das (23), son of Kanudas, and Siddharth Das (19), son of Binay Chandra Das, of the city’s Machhuapara area.
Police said the bodies of retired Rangpur District School teacher Ganapati Chakraborty Jewel (65), his wife Pritilata Chakraborty Bhola (50), postgraduate student Agami Chakraborty Kandi (25) and fifth grade student Ayush Chakraborty Priyam (12) were recovered from a house in Machhuapara on Saturday (August 22) at around 11 pm.
According to the police commissioner, on Thursday night, Mughdah and Siddharth went to the roof of Ganapati Chakraborty’s house by climbing over the neighboring building. There, they were consuming Yaba. When Ganapati Chakraborty heard the noise and went to the roof and asked about their conversation, he was killed by tying a towel around his neck to keep his identity a secret.
Hearing his screams, his wife Pritilita Chakraborty was also strangled to death with a towel while she was climbing the stairs. Later, when her mother came forward, her daughter Kandi Chakraborty was also strangled to death with a towel and rope. Police said that the last sleeping child, Priyam, was strangled to death with a towel and a pillow.
After the murder, the accused took a bath in a bathroom of the house. Later, they sat at the dining table and consumed dates and the remaining Yaba. Then, taking advantage of the empty streets during Friday prayers, they left the house with some gold ornaments. Later, they hid them in an abandoned place behind a nearby temple. According to the information given by the accused, the police have seized the evidence.
The police commissioner also said that the accused deliberately scattered the items in the house to make it look like a robbery, in order to divert the investigation into the murder. He also said that two mobile phones in the house were soaked in water mixed with detergent to remove fingerprints.
Police claim that during initial interrogation, the two arrested confessed to their involvement in the murder. The incident is being investigated to see if there are any other people involved in the murder.
