In the ‘July National Charter’ referendum held alongside the 13th National Parliament election, public opinion is clearly leaning in favor of ‘yes’. According to unofficial results, 69,347 votes were cast in favor of the charter from 106 centers in various parliamentary constituencies in Dhaka, while 19,945 votes were cast in favor of it.
Voting took place simultaneously in 299 constituencies across the country from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on Thursday. This initial picture, before the final results are announced, indicates a strong position in favor of the charter in the referendum.
A ‘yes’ vote in the referendum would pave the way for sweeping constitutional reforms. The proposed changes include expanding the powers of the president, introducing a secret ballot in presidential elections, creating a 100-member upper house, and limiting the prime minister’s term to a maximum of two terms. There would also be provisions to separate the positions of prime minister and party leader.
In addition, there are proposals to increase the freedom of voting of members of parliament by amending Article 70 of the constitution, elect a deputy speaker from the opposition party, reform the judicial appointment process, and protect fundamental rights during emergencies. Uninterrupted internet, personal data protection, and increasing women’s representation are also part of the charter.
