Popular and talented actress of Bengali cinema, Jayashree Kabir, is no more. She passed away on Monday (January 12) while undergoing treatment at a London hospital after suffering from physical complications for a long time. Her nephew Javed Mahmud confirmed the news of her death.
Born in Kolkata in 1952, Jayashree Kabir gained recognition in the acting world, but she gained real popularity through her work in Bangladeshi films. She made her silver screen debut in the film ‘Pratidhi’ under the direction of world-renowned director Satyajit Ray. However, she made a permanent place in the hearts of the audience by acting in timeless films like ‘Seemana Periye’, ‘Rupali Saikat’, ‘Surya Kanya’ and ‘Mohana’ under the direction of renowned director Alamgir Kabir.
Especially the popular song from the film ‘Seemana Periye’ is still vivid in the memory of the audience. Jayashree Kabir had been living in London for a long time after leaving her acting career. There, she used to teach English literature at a university.
Among the memorable films in which Yashree Kabir acted are – Kolkata’s ‘Protidudhi’ (1970), Dhaka’s ‘Suryakanya’ (1975), Kolkata’s ‘Adhaar’ (1976), Dhaka’s ‘Seemana Periye’ (1977), ‘Rupali Saikat’ (1979), ‘Dena Paona’ (1981), ‘Mohana’ (1982), ‘Nalish’ (1982), ‘Purskar’ (1983) and ‘Shahar Te Dore’ (1984).
Jayashree Kabir will remain immortal in the history of Bengali cinema through her contributions to cinema and memorable characters.
