Two-year-old Sajid, who fell into an abandoned hole in a tubewell in Tanore, Rajshahi, has not been rescued even after 24 hours. The fire service searched up to a depth of 42 feet but found no sign of him. Considering the situation, the rescuers have now decided to widen the hole by another 10 feet.
After conducting a continuous operation till Thursday afternoon, Fire Service Director Lt. Col. Tajul Islam said the hole could be about 150 to 200 feet deep and the child could be stuck at any level. “There is no such technology in the world yet that can immediately enter such a deep hole and ensure rescue,” he commented. Considering the safety risks, a parallel tunnel is being built next to the main hole to search.
The previous night, the camera was lowered to 30 feet, but the child could not be seen because the layer of soil and straw falling from above obstructed visibility. Initially, Sajid’s crying could be heard, but the sound gradually faded.
According to the family, Sajid fell into a hole covered with straw while walking near the field on Wednesday afternoon. Locals said that the hole, dug for irrigation, had been left open for a year due to lack of water, which has now become a life-threatening situation.
Hundreds of people have gathered at the rescue site, but disaster management teams are continuing to work to keep the situation under control. The fire service said the operation will not stop until the child’s whereabouts are identified.
