Amid the long war and humanitarian disaster in Gaza, a rare sight was seen in the war-torn valley on Tuesday (December 2) – a mass wedding of 54 couples on a single stage. The event was organized by the United Arab Emirates-based humanitarian organization Al Fares Al Shahim.
The long conflict has brought social life in Gaza to a near standstill. Even weddings—a religious and cultural celebration in Palestinian society—have become a rare occurrence. While there has been some relief after a temporary ceasefire, there is no chance of a return to normal events.
Amid the rubble, bride Iman Hassan Lawa, dressed in traditional attire, and Hikmat Lawa, dressed in a suit, stood with other couples. “It’s difficult to start a new life in these circumstances, but I don’t want to lose hope,” said Hikmat, 27. “God willing, the war will stop.”
Even amidst the festivities, the humanitarian crisis in Gaza is palpable. Nearly two million people have been displaced; food, water, and shelter are in short supply—life is at a standstill under the weight of destruction. Yet, the newlyweds had a glimmer of hope in their eyes.
Hikmat said, “Before, my dreams were a house, a job, a normal life. Now I just want a safe place.” Unable to contain her emotions, Iman said, “It’s hard to feel joy amidst so much grief. But I believe—one day we will build everything anew.”
