The long-running surge in vegetable prices in Dhaka markets has started to ease slightly. As the impact of recent rains diminishes and winter vegetables begin to arrive, prices have shown a downward trend over the past two weeks, giving consumers some relief.
During visits to various markets in the capital on Friday, papaya was seen selling at Tk 30 per kg, potatoes at Tk 30, pointed gourd at Tk 60, ridge gourd at Tk 60, yardlong beans at Tk 80, eggplants at Tk 80, and taro stems at Tk 80 per kg. Newly arrived turnips are being sold at Tk 100 per kg. However, green chilies remain high at Tk 160 per kg, and tomatoes at Tk 120, which continues to trouble buyers.
Consumers say that although prices have decreased compared to the past few months, they are still not entirely affordable. On the other hand, vegetable sellers claim that due to rain-related crop damage, some prices have increased again compared to last week. They expect the market to stabilize further and prices to fall once winter vegetables become more widely available.
