A violent incident shook Dhaka University as independent VP candidate for the upcoming DUSU election, Jalal Ahmed alias Jwalamoyee Jalal, was accused of stabbing his roommate, student Rabiul Haque, at Haji Muhammad Mohsin Hall. The attack took place around 12:30 AM on August 26. Soon after, the university authorities handed Jalal over to police, and a case has been filed against him by the hall administration. DU Proctor Prof. Saifuddin Ahmed said that legal action will be taken according to the law and that the Election Commission will decide whether Jalal’s candidacy remains valid.

Following the incident, tensions erupted in Mohsin Hall as hundreds of students gathered in front of Jalal’s room, demanding his immediate expulsion. Witnesses said the stabbing stemmed from a long-standing conflict between Jalal and his roommate. Rabiul alleged that Jalal verbally abused and attacked him when asked to stop making noise at night. Meanwhile, Jalal countered the allegation on Facebook, claiming that he was assaulted by Rabiul, who he accused of residing in the hall illegally.

The hall provost assured students of Jalal’s expulsion and attempted to calm the situation. The Proctor further stated that the incident would not affect the DUSU elections. However, past complaints against Jalal will now be re-examined, and students have demanded the resignation of the Mohsin Hall provost. Earlier, Rabiul had even submitted a written appeal to the provost claiming he was “at risk of death” due to repeated threats from Jalal.
